About Us
The Nelson Food Cupboard Society is a non-profit organization that manages the Nelson Food Cupboard and addresses food insecurity needs in Nelson and the surrounding areas.
The Nelson Food Cupboard Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and employs four part-time staff members.
Since its inception in 1999, the Nelson Food Cupboard Society has been a progressive food bank providing barrier-free access to quality food for those experiencing food insecurity in our community.
Our vision is that everyone has access to enough healthy food. We trust people to know what they need.
Our mission is to give meaning to food as a basic human right by:
- Providing free food for people who need it in a barrier-free and dignified way.
- Fostering broad community involvement in short and long-term solutions to hunger.
- Providing public education around poverty, class, and food access.
- Providing education related to food skills and personal empowerment.
-
Our Goals are:
- To be a self-sustaining food resource centre.
- To raise awareness and foster broad community involvement in food access, poverty, and related oppression.
- To develop collaborative partnerships for food supply.
Our operational success is due to over 40 volunteers that contribute time on a regular basis and to generous community businesses & individuals who donate food & money to the Nelson Food Cupboard. We also acknowledge significant financial contributions from the Government of British Columbia, the Columbia Basin Trust, the Kootenay Coop Grocery Store, Mazon Canada, the Regional District of the Central Kootenay and the Osprey Community Foundation.
