General Coordinator Job Description
(22 1/2 hours per week)

Responsible to:
• Board of Directors, Nelson Food Cupboard Society as supervisors; and
• Food Cupboard customers, volunteers, donors, and funders through service provision

Working Environment:
• Decision-making is carried out in a collaborative and consultative manner with the Board of Directors
• All activities of Cupboard operation will be carried out in a barrier free environment that promotes equality, respect, inclusion and individual empowerment
• Staff are expected to be familiar with the local anti-poverty and food security movement and to maintain open communication and collaboration in the promotion of food security

Priority Tasks and Responsibilities

Day to Day Operation of Food Cupboard:
• Responsible for overseeing the day to day operation of the Nelson Food Cupboard
• Coordinate food purchasing and pick-ups. 
• Maintain a current donor database of financial and in-kind and food donations  
• Maintain data on patterns of Food Cupboard use, and together with customers and staff use surveys and the “Suggestion Box” to identify gaps in service

Staff Management:
• Oversee activities of NFCS staff to ensure their duties are being carried out
• Coordinate staff hiring and conducting annual staff evaluations
• Attend to the professional development needs of staff
• Speak with staff weekly to assess ever-changing needs, challenges & successes of Food Cupboard operations

Volunteer Management:
• Ensure an ongoing volunteer resource base through recruitment, training, scheduling, appreciation initiatives and volunteer support
• Attend to the professional development needs of volunteers

Financial and General Administration:
• General reception duties, photocopying, office supply errands; maintain computer functioning;
• Respond to public and private enquiries

Fundraising:
• Some grant writing, and as required, develop new programs and policies.
• Work with the Board to set priorities for fundraising initiatives. 
• Assist private businesses fundraising on our behalf. 
• Organize all aspects of Nelson Food Cupboard fundraisers.

Communications:
• Have monthly or bi-weekly meetings or other forms of communications with co-coordinator regarding funding opportunities, budget management, new programming, customer visits, etc.
• Maintain co-operative, open and respectful relationships with donors, community partners, volunteers, the Nelson United Church (as landlords and supporters), the Board of Directors, and the general public.
• Attend monthly Board meetings and provide monthly progress reports to the Board. 
• Complete an annual report
• Create monthly Food Cupboard newsletters for community wide dissemination
• Maintain a high project profile in the community, including radio interviews; newspaper articles; Nelson United Church newsletter article; presentations to local schools around food security;  public presentations to groups as requested (and as time allows); attend public meetings with local politicians; regularly update pamphlets and coordinate volunteers to deliver them to Nelson’s community service agencies and high profile donor locations.

As time allows:
• In collaboration with community partners, support initiatives that demonstrate the links between poverty, homelessness, unemployment and health.
• Gather useful and relevant resource material and offer to Cupboard customers
• With community partners and the Board of Directors, explore and promote creative ways to improve food security.  Document ideas and publicize any related projects that emerge in the monthly newsletter.
• Community Development; participate in Community Food Matters meetings & events
• Read current information & studies relative to food insecurity

We accept

- packaged perishable and non-perishable food items
- fresh produce (including local farm “seconds”)
- prepared food dishes and canned goods, if prepared in a commercial kitchen under Food Safe certified supervision and proper food handling guidelines
- farm eggs of all sizes and colours

We cannot accept

- stale/hard breads
- open, bulging or compromised damaged products
- food with severe freezer burn or decay
